Floor Drain Cleaning by Drain Type

Garage and Utility Floor Drains
A garage floor drain sits at the low point of the slab and collects whatever drifts toward it: grit off tires, leaves blown under the door, sawdust from the workbench. That settles in the trap until a hose-down leaves a puddle. The plumber lifts the grate, scoops out the trap, then cables or jets the line beyond it. A floor drain is also where a blocked sewer shows up first. Triple-I notes that sewage from a blocked main can back up through floor drains, and that turns it into an emergency drain cleaning call.

Laundry Standpipe Clogs
A standpipe overflows when the washer pumps out faster than the pipe below it can carry the water off. Sometimes the blockage is a wad of lint in the trap at the base of the standpipe, a short fix. Other times the run beyond the trap is narrowed along its length and needs jetting. HomeGuide puts a laundry drain visit at $150 to $250. Note when the overflow happens: only during the drain and spin cycle, or any time water runs nearby. The second pattern points past the laundry line.

Laundry Sink and Utility Tub Drains
Utility tubs take paint rinse water, mop buckets, and in many garages the washer hose hooked over the rim. Paint, grout and plaster settle in the trap and harden there, and a heavy wash load can then finish the job. Ask the plumber whether the tub and the standpipe share a line. If both drain slowly, one cleaning should cover the two.

Floor Drain Traps and Sewer Odors
Every floor drain has a trap that holds water to keep sewer gas out. A Utah sanitation district explains that the water evaporates when a drain goes unused, faster in hot or dry weather, and lists garage floor drains and laundry drains among the usual spots. Its advice is to run water in those drains at least once a month or pour in a cup or two, with a little mineral oil on top to slow evaporation. If the smell comes back soon after a refill, ask a plumber to check the trap itself.

Floor Drain Cleaning Quote Factors
What came up
Lint and soap point to the laundry branch, grit to the floor drain trap. Sewage points to the main, a bigger job.Getting to the drain
A grate rusted in place, or a drain buried under storage shelves, adds time before any cable goes in.Trip charge
A $50 to $200 call-out fee is common, per HomeGuide, and it usually includes the first hour.Cable or jetter
A trap clog is cable work. A run lined with lint or silt from end to end is where jetting earns its higher price.Repeat clogs
If the same drain backs up a few months after each cleaning, film the line; sewer camera inspection explains the visit.
See storm drain cleaning if the drain outside the garage door carries rainwater rather than wastewater.
